Author: sesor Subject: tab for "another flavour" Date: Wed, 21 Jan 1998 05:25:58 Again, David plays this song in an open tuning (I think it's E) that I haven't figured out and I just play it in normal tuning. Also, I play this song a little differently to fill in the empty spaces but the generally the differences are small and basically in the main riff alone. On the album, at some points, David cheats a little and uses what sounds like some sort of sampling or tremelo effect. Sampling?! The Sundays?! It's sampling very much in the same vein as the tremelo guitars in, dare I say it, "How Soon Is Now". But I know that I'm just out to get David and trying to make him out as a thief of Johnny-sounds as much as possible. It doesn't sound anything like "How Soon Is Now" really... but he still ripped it off. Does anyone have any ideas on what that soft Hammond Organ type sound in the background is? It sounds to me like a deeply equalized, highly processed and reversed vocal track or something. It'd be perfect for one of my nightmares. I have my suspicions as it sounds like a result of one of those wonderful serendipitous moments in the studio but I'd like to know what it is if anyone on the list knows or at least has an idea. I never actually sat down and REALLY compared David's and my way of playing "Another Flavour" until last night and I realized that there are a lot more discrepancies than I had originally thought but it's not too bad. I noticed that my way is more bluesy. One big difference in my way is that I totally eliminate that little thing David does in jumping back and forth between two notes during the lead/chorus. It sounds too hacky for me. These tabs are written for the sole (electric) guitarist performing live. I play an extra note or two in the main riff but I'll just change those tabs to what it sounds like on Static & Silence as best as I can. There are some parts in these tabs where I left in my own little twists here and there but I kept that to a minimum. If you find any mistakes, I'm sorry. Chalk it up to human typographical error. Capo at the 2nd fret or tune up two semitones. h = hammer on p = pull off \ = slide to next note m = mute note just after hitting, before next note; do not let ring ^1/4 = pull one quarter step ^1/2 = pull one half step ~ = vibrato < > = harmonic Main Riff - there's a little change at the end. Vocal Break (1:47) - I like to play this little lick to fill in the sound a bit but it doesn't belong on record. It's more acceptable live. On my recording, the second guitar fills in here. Sometimes I use it to end the riff just before the vocal break as it works just as well (minus the harmonics of course). David is silent during this part on S&S. I'm not too sure about that last chord since I don't end the song this way when I play it. I like to finish this lead/chorus like the other one, then go into another break, then I go back into the main riff again. I like to end the song as I ended the main riff just before the vocal break but with another little twist. I can't imagine why anyone would but if you want to know how I do it, just e-mail me privately and I guess I can send it to you. Not a stalker, John P.S. After changing the main riff to more closely mimic the way David plays it, it has less of a bluesy feel. I think it's mainly because David doesn't seem to like to pull or vibrato too much and I do. Enjoy. ------------------------------------- From: sesor Date: Unknown ANOTHER FLAVOUR I'm too lazy to type up all of Another Flavour, but capo the second fret and use the E, A and D strings. Well, because of the capo, the strings are F#, B and E (I think). Anyway, capo the second fret. Let me see if I can use tabs to give you the main "riff". F#--------------------------------------------------------------------- C#--------------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------------- E------2-2--0-2-0-------2-2----0-2-0-------2-2----0-2-0-------2-------- B---------02------2---------02-------2---------02-------2-------------- F#-0-0--------------0-0----------------0-0----------------0-0---------- This is pretty much the whole song. When I play to it I always noodle around the breaks and bridges so I've never tried to figure out what David actually wrote but if I do, I'll send it to you. That wasn't a very good sentence was it? Anyway, making those tabs was kind of fun. Oh! The "02" on the B string is a hammer on. I didn't know how else to put it. It sounds like David is playing a telecaster using the bridge pickup. I have to listen more closely to find out but I just don't care enough to do it.
